Photo "Story" - Final

For my final I wanted to make it about hiking and landscapes, two of my favorite things.  I didn't want to make up some cheesy story to go along with these photos because I think it would take away from the whole point of going out hiking, it's supposed to be peaceful and therapeutic.  I decided to put together my favorite views from the trail and write about the kinds of things you can experience while out in nature.

This photo is one of my favorites.  These trees are at the edge of a clearing, along the edge of the trail.  You can see the ground fog from the clearing seep through the trees and onto the trail.  It's like a blanket of cool air that you can see and feel. Very surreal.

Sometimes the best part of the trail is actually looking up.  It seems a lot of the time people are so focused on moving forward they never take the time to stop and observe what's around them.  I love how the sun illuminates the outline of all the branches and the moss.  It's rare to have a beautiful sunny day during the winter.

The trail comes up to several clearings, looking out onto a sort of side lake or slow moving stream.  The sun shines over the tops of the trees behind you, illuminating the opposite shore.  The water looks so calm and it's quiet.  At this point, the road noise is gone and the only thing you can hear is the occasional far off motorcycle or high flying jet.

The trail takes you back inside the trees, with the sun beaming in through the gaps.  The air temperature is slowly rising and the fog is lifting.  The fresh, crisp air is like heaven.  The patches of gravel crunch under your feet and woodpeckers can be heard working away in the distance.

After a few bridges,  you can see water again.  There are a lot of ducks peacefully swimming and resting on logs.  A cool breeze drifts in from the water and the trail grows slightly muddy.  It's tough to get close enough to photograph the wildlife without scaring them away, my camera lens doesn't zoom much!

The trail continues on, but this is where I turn around.  I've gotten to see the lake and experience the calm, and it's time to return to society.  Hiking is a great way to take a break, even for just a few hours on a Saturday morning.  It's easy for us to forget to stop and smell the roses, especially in high school.  We all need an escape, and taking pictures of the natural world around me is mine.

  1. Your landscapes are always beautiful, always quality work however i didn't really feel like they told a story. It's a nice little first person narrative. My favorite photo is the horizontal one with the birds, i feel like the three with the trees are sort of repetitive.

  2. Eli: This set of pictures seemed more like a journey of you, and I think that would work as a story. The story is of: you. Although it might be stretching to be a story, I think the pictures are all well taken. I really like the pictures, and they are all really cool. I really like the very first picture; the picture is very mystical and it does have the eerie feeling of something holy and venerable. I think my least favorite picture would be the one of the birds. I didn’t really like it because it just seems like there is too much going on, and it just kind of pulls away from the main center of the picture. A way you could solve it is maybe cropping out part of it? Or even making it black and white, but that might pull away from the meaning of the picture’s true meaning. Good job!

  3. Eli, your first picture is beautiful. The composition is good and the light is super cool. I really like it. The photo with the birds is another really strong one but might be stronger compositely if it was on the bottom or top third line. My least favorite is the third because it is kind of plain and the colors blur together. I really like your set overall but I'm not sure it's a story. Landscapes are definitely something you are really good at so keep doin what you're doin.

  4. I liked how these pictures weren't necessarily a story, with a beginning middle and end, but I did feel a story about your hike and adventure. : ) I thought these pictures were pretty good. My favorite was the first picture and my least favorite was the second picture. I think if you tried different angles and perspectives the pictures would be more interesting and less repetitive.

  5. the story makes sense. It’s not really a story, I mean the captions make it more of a story. Overall its good, the first two pictures have a lot going on. My favorite photo is the last one but I wish it wasn't so small. My least favorite one it the second one, there’s too much going on. I think I would change the photos in the maybe you take pictures of people walking this path and have a start/finish point. Good job!
